Garden Bloggers´ Bloom Day - March 2018

Dear readers,
have a happy Garden Bloggers´ Bloom Day - March 2018! I hope you are enjoying great weather for gardening as well as some pretty blooms. We had a week of wonderful warm weather in Vienna. It gave me the opportunity to not only enjoy blooms in my garden, but also to do some tidying up. With the help of a lovely friend, I finally removed the leaves that have fallen during autumn and winter. Now the garden is ready for a new happy gardening season to begin. Just that the weather is not in for it any more. After a week of sunshine and warmth, it´s getting colder again. Today was grey and dull and on the weekend it should get even worse. Minus seven degrees - everything but spring weather. Some people having locked away their warm winter jackets already, will need to pull them out again and gardening- well, it too seems to have to wait a bit. Luckily I had the chance to take some pictures of my flowering plants during the sunny days. I am very happy with my late winter/early spring border. This is an area in my garden in which I planted some cyclamen coum, galanthus and hellebores below a hibiscus bush. It´s lovely to see how the plants thrive under the bush. The cyclamen coum are self seeding. Not only next to the mother plants, but also in other areas in my garden I find the little seedlings. I am imagining how wonderful the area around this flowerbed will look in some years time. A sea of pink blooms of cyclamen coum in the borders and in the mossy grass. Wonderful, exactly what I have hoped for. I´d like to thank Carol from May Dreams Gardens for hosting Garden Bloggers´ Bloom Day. As always, I am excited to see the blooms that garden bloggers around the world will share today at http://www.maydreamsgardens.com
Have a lovely week!
Best wishes,
Lisa

Iris reticulata

I am especially delighted by the colouration of this cyclamen coum plant. Unlike the other plants, the colour of its flower is a lighter pink with some darker pink stripes. Doesn´t it look unique?!

The cyclamen offspring I am so proud of.

Can you find the small seedlings next to the mother plant?

Even in the grass they self seeded. Imagine the grass brightened up by little bright pink flowers in some years time.

After tidying up- the gardening season can start.

Hellebores niger

Don´t these colours go well together?

Some primulas to cheer up my terrace.

  2. Apart from your interesting Hellebores, I noticed that you have a snowdrop that is not the most common Galanthus nivalis. Yours has an extra green mark and a much wider leaf. It might be worth looking at some websites to see if you can identify it, that is if you have time. One website that is a good identification guide is here:-

  3. Your new spring border is gorgeous. I especially like your double hellebores and that cyclamen is so sweet. I can't seem to grow them so when I see them popping up all over your garden I am so envious. Happy GBBD. I seem to be having the same weathers. It was above normal here yesterday and I too got out in the garden to tidy up. Today and the next few days it is to be cold again. I am looking forward to warmer weather that stays with us for awhile. I really like the ladder that holds your round pots. It brings flowers up where you can see them. I haven't seen one of these around here. The pots you made look fabulous all planted up. Cheers...

    1. Thank you a lot, Lisa!
I really didn´t expect the cyclamen to do so well. I was afraid they might die, but happily they are thriving. Maybe you should try growing them again.

  4. Proliferation of blues and violets, typical temperate country colors which we seldom have in the tropics.

  5. Dear Lisa. Oh, the weather is spoiling everything! I love your cyclamen. In my garden they are seeding too, but only one flower each plant. After all those year no flower carpet! Maybe I should buy another variety. Your terracotta pots look great against the brick wall. I like the pot with the strips! Very classy. I hope the snow will meld soon. Groetjes,

  6. Your spring flowers are beautiful! I'm envious of those cyclamen and all of those seedlings. The one with the streaks of darker pink is unique and really lovely. I am envious of your iris too! I had reticulata one year and then no more - I think the voles got them. And the purple hepatica. I have always wanted purple hepatica and I don't know why I haven't tried it yet. To me it ranks up there with Virginia bluebells as the loveliest of ephemerals.

You have so many really nice pink hellebores, although my favorite is H. niger, I think because it reminds me of a giant hepatica. I love your primroses too. Such beautiful vivid colors. The patterned yellow one looks so well with the dark magenta ones on either side.
